Practitioners of sustainable agriculture seek to integrate three main objectives into their work: a healthy environment, economic profitability, and social and economic equity. Every person involved in the food system—growers, food processors, distributors, retailers, consumers, and waste managers—can play a role in ensuring a sustainable agricultural system. Hydroponics- "The process of growing plants in sand, gravel, or liquid, with added nutrients but without soil. " aquaponics- a system of aquaculture in which the waste produced by farmed fish or other aquatic animals supplies nutrients for plants grown hydroponically, which in turn purify the water. Some of the aquaponics systems that we now currently as a class are participating in include a few plants of our own choice that are required to grow. in the top portion of the system where the plants are intended to grow, allowed great lengths of the lilikoi vines that would eventually wrap around the table. When deciding what exact plants we wanted in our system we knew that certain foods would be a lot harder to grow and would need more time to fruit or to be ready to harvest within the time frame given. Therefore we decided on growing Kalo also known as taro, and green onions because of its rapid speed in the amount of time needed to grow. Real People Talk - what are your thoughts on sustainable growing?- "theres a long way to go before we cane self sufficient where people will be able to produce for their family. ways that we are able to live sustainable is to support local farmers and fisherman, one day hopefully be able to trade locally as well so we wouldn't need to trade with others out of state. I contribute by shopping at Iolani school which offers fresh fruit and vegetables grown from their farms. Both harvested and cleaned within the time period of forty eight hours that is sold to the public." Louis Charles Dorm advisor in Kapuaiwa dorm at Kamehameha schools.
